Heather Freeman is a contemporary abstract artist creating vibrant paintings that celebrate the joy of noticing. Working from her studio in Durango, Colorado, Heather creates visual adventures inspired by life’s simple moments, the beauty of the natural world, and the experience of chasing life’s biggest dreams.

For Heather, every painting begins with two questions: What am I feeling right now? What do I want to appreciate today? Color becomes the starting point for an expressive conversation, joined by organic shapes, layers, movement, and unexpected details that invite the viewer to look closer. Her recent work leans into the symbolic, whimsical, and abstract, creating dynamic visual journeys that explore the complexity of who we are and how we show up in the world.

Heather finds inspiration in moments that are easy to overlook—the changing light on a morning walk, wildflowers in the mountains, the movement of water, a shared moment with family, or something unexpectedly beautiful in an ordinary day. Her work is rooted in appreciation, gratitude, and hope, reflecting her belief that joy doesn't always have to be something we chase. Sometimes it begins simply by noticing what is already there.

Her paintings are intentionally open-ended. Rather than telling the viewer exactly what to see or feel, Heather creates space for curiosity and discovery. Layers of color, visible brushwork, organic forms, and unexpected details reveal themselves over time, allowing each painting to become a different experience for the person living with it.

After years of balancing creative work with careers in public health, coaching, education, and community building, Heather fully stepped into her identity as an artist in 2021. Today, she creates original contemporary abstract paintings from her studio at the ArtRoom Collective in Durango’s Smiley Building.
