Evoked Spaces/Abstracted Forms/Collage Constructions in 2D Mixed Media
The Smiley Building Studio 20c has been my creative workspace for 16 years, though I have been making art for most of my life. It is what I have always done. The foundations for this were formally stamped with a BA in Art, but so much of life has had its way of training me along the way as well.
My studio has an ebb and flow – sometimes there are long periods playing with the process and not working on product - times which I refer to as an “eddy out” or “gestational” depending on how the energy feels in those moments. This rhythm lends itself to working in series in which I explore a theme for a bit before moving on - meaning I am either a bit of a restless soul or I have a short attention span. Both are probably true.
This work is about the intersection of chaos and order – energy expressed with the strokes of whatever (sometimes unusual) tools I happen to pick up against a sharp line or a smooth surface chosen to be left untouched. About what is found in the spaces in-between, in what remains after the scraping and sanding, or what peeks through the layers. About the shapes fitting together to help make some sense of the world around me.
