Deborah Sussex Photographer & Artist

I’m a multidisciplinary artist based in Durango, Colorado, working across photography, pastel, watercolor, ink, and mixed media—drawn to the expressive potential of mark-making, texture, and the mystery of not knowing where a piece will lead. For me, the creative process is a conversation between inner and outer landscapes—part intuition, part exploration, part letting go.

One of my earliest memories is sitting on my mother’s lap as she read to me about Rembrandt from the World Book Encyclopedia. I was just four, and for reasons I couldn’t explain, I was captivated. That early spark grew into a life rooted in creativity and curiosity.

I’ve never followed a traditional path—no formal art school, but an eclectic education shaped by passions for art, wilderness, culture, and mindfulness. I earned a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology, spent over 15 years as a wilderness educator, and later ran a photography studio and gallery for two decades in Ely, Minnesota, on the edge of the Boundary Waters.

In 2012, my husband, our beloved Border Collie, and I relocated to Durango, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living near the mountains. I draw constant inspiration from the high desert and alpine landscapes of the Four Corners region. Many of my creative insights emerge during long bike rides through these shifting seasonal terrains.

In 2016, I founded Creative Nature™ Coaching, supporting others in navigating their creative journeys with clarity and confidence. I’m also a certified mindfulness teacher, integrating meditation and awareness practices into both my art and coaching work.

You can find my art at Urban Market in downtown Durango, or visit me at my home studio in the beautiful Turtle Lake Valley.
