Studio and Plein Air Landscapes of the Four Corners in Pastel
Growing up, art was my world. And throughout College at the University of Colorado, I continued my creative explorations with the medium of silkscreen printing and photographic process. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a Liberal Arts Degree my endeavors became less artistic and more business oriented until moving to Durango over two decades ago. There, I combined two newly discovered passions – exploring the beauty of the rugged Four Corners while hiking, and discovering the intensity of pastels. A great combination! My paintings are created either in plein air or in the studio from photographs taken trail side throughout the Southwest.
My goal as an artist is to transport the viewer into my natural world, a place where color is often pushed to create fantasy realism. I like to create a vibrancy not often found in nature. The tactile energy of pastels allows me to be bold and gestural with my strokes and marks. When applying the pastel, I use an additive/subtractive process. Pastel layers are applied and then removed to create a feeling of transparency not often found in the pastel medium. Having the hand textured paper reveal itself adds another dimension.
I show regularly in local, regional and national juried shows. Numerous honors include several Jurors’ Choice Awards, First Place Awards for pastel and plein air, the Durango Area Tourism Office featured artist and a Purchase Award for the permanent art collection of San Juan College in Farmington, NM.
