As a painter, my primary focus is on the landscape of the Southwest. I like to explore and experience the different tactile qualities and different levels of intimacy offered by the varied media. Sometimes I choose to paint a subject in varied mediums to experiment with how each influences my work, how my choice of paper or other surface may take me in a different direction. I also enjoy breaking the mold—abandoning the landscape to pursue an adventure in painting animals, still-life, and even portraiture. For instance, because I enjoy cooking, I did an entire series called Herbal Expressions—my interpretation of the herbs in my garden. I’ve painted purple cows as well as still-life paintings of cocktails, seasonal fruits and vegetables. But I do return to the landscape. The constantly changing Southwest colorscapes, be it in Durango or elsewhere in the Four Corners, guide me as a professional artist into new, exciting palettes.
